Mr. Paul Rolian, Director of the Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC), chaired the Diploma Ceremony held on the occasion of the closure of the 38th Trade Policy Course (English) which was organized by the ITTC. The 38th Trade Policy Course (TPC) was held in Geneva, at the WTO Headquarters.
In his address to the participants, Mr. Rolian congratulated the participants for completing the training programme and said that although this day was a recompense for three months of hard work, the main recompense should come in their future work. He said that they were now better equipped and encouraged them to share their acquired knowledge within their administrations as well as reaching out to civil society, academia and parliamentarians. Paul Rolian invited the participants to keep alive the network of contacts, which has been consolidated during this Geneva-based activity.
On behalf of the participants of the 38th TPC, Mr. Karma Tshering from Bhutan extended the participants' appreciation and gratitude. He said that the journey had not ended when they reached Geneva – on the contrary, the journey had just begun. It was a unique opportunity for countries to gain knowledge and skills and participate in the multilateral trading system. The experts gave the participants the idea of the dynamics and complexities of the system and the course provided a platform in which to interact.
Trade Policy Courses are expected to promote a more active participation of beneficiary countries in the work of the Organization. Throughout the three-month training, officials become acquainted, through lectures, debates, attendance at WTO meetings and simulation exercises, with virtually all the issues dealt with within the framework of the WTO. Visits to other international organizations located in Geneva also provide an opportunity to become familiar with trade-related aspects of the work conducted by these organizations.
This course completes the Geneva-based training programme for 2006 which forms part of the WTO Technical Cooperation and Training Plan.
