Both were held in collaboration with the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), which supplied five expert speakers.

The workshop for journalists had nine participants, including senior reporters from the Jakarta Post, the Manila Times, the Bangkok Post, Thai Public Broadcasting Service (Thai PBS) TV, Malaysia’s news agency Bernama, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) and GMA Television News.

The workshop for NGOs had the same number of participants, and included representatives from Indonesia for Global Justice, the Philippines’ Federation of Free Workers, the Board of Trade of Thailand, the Federation of Thai Industries and Malaysia’s Monitoring Sustainability for Globalisation.

The resource persons for both workshops included Thailand’s former ambassador to the WTO Aspiradi Tantraporn and ESCAP’s chief of Trade Policy and Analysis Section Dr Mia Mikic. A former Philippine delegate to the WTO, Mr Johannes Benjamin R. Bernabe, was an additional resource person for the NGO workshop.

WTO Spokesman Keith Rockwell opened both workshops through televised addresses. He gave an overview of the WTO and its efforts to connect with the media and civil society, respectively.

To encourage interactive discussions, both workshops featured presentations by participants on special situations of their country’s trade in the region. Each day started with learning sessions on a selection of key areas of WTO work, moving on to presentations by participants on subjects that interested them. Participants also chaired some sessions and acted as discussants in some sessions.

WTO information officers Peter Ungphakorn and Luis Ople gave presentations on the history of the WTO and its main functions and agreements, including dispute settlement, agriculture, intellectual property, rules and regional trade agreements.
