A first donation of CHF1.3 million (about EUR825,000) will be offered to the
Doha Development Agenda Global Trust Fund. This donation will finance technical
assistance programmes and training activities especially targeting Least
Developed Countries. The aim is to better adapt their practices and laws to WTO
rules and disciplines, improve the implementation of their obligations and
enhance the exercise of their membership rights.
A second donation of CHF160,000 (about EUR100,000) will be offered to
the Standards and Trade Development Facility. The objective is to assist
developing countries in improving compliance with international sanitary and phytosanitary standards which must be met for certain products to be exported.
Least Developed Countries will be the main beneficiaries of this donation.
WTO Director General Pascal Lamy declared “I welcome this donation which
illustrates Finland's commitment to help Least Developed Countries integrate in
the global economy and take better advantage of the multilateral trading
system.”
Finland's Ambassador, Hannu Himanen, stated “These two contributions reflect
Finland's continuous support to Least Developed Countries with the aim of making
trade a tool for growth and poverty reduction.”
