Consultations
Complaint by United States (See also DS520)
On 28 September 2017, the United States requested consultations with Canada with respect to measures maintained by the Canadian province of British Columbia governing the sale of wine in grocery stores. This is the second request for consultations by the United States with Canada concerning the sale of wine on grocery stores.
The United States claimed that the measures appear to be inconsistent with:
- Article III:4 of the GATT 1994.
On 11 October 2017, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand requested to join the consultations. On 12 October 2017, the European Union requested to join the consultations. Subsequently, Canada informed the DSB that it had accepted the requests of Argentina, Australia, the European Union and New Zealand to join the consultations.
Panel and Appellate Body proceedings
On 25 May 2018, the United States requested the establishment of a panel. At its meeting on 22 June 2018, the DSB deferred the establishment of a panel.
At its meeting on 20 July 2018, the DSB established a panel. Argentina, Australia, Chile, China, the European Union, India, Israel, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Russian Federation, South Africa and Chinese Taipei reserved their third-party rights.
