Trainees complete first course of 45th anniversary year

WTO Director General Mike Moore, bade farewell on 7 April 2000 to the 29 participants (see below) of the WTO’s 13th Trade Policy Course, in a short ceremony at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva.

Mr Moore told participants that their enhanced skills are important tools to take back to their respective countries, and that these would make them “stronger advocates for the advancement of the interests of their countries, while also giving consideration to other countries’ interests”.

“We are looking at ways to expand the training capacity of the WTO”, Mr. Moore added.

On behalf of the participants, Mr Shoukat Randhawa, from Pakistan, expressed their “great appreciation for the opportunity they’d had to enhance their understanding of the basis and rationale of the multilateral trading system, and the process of globalization which is essential to understand the world economy”.

He thanked the WTO for allocating financial and human resources for the Trade Policy Courses to take place, benefitting developing countries, least developed and transition economies.

“We suggest this course be officially recorded as the Millennium Course”, he added, referring to the fact that this 13th course was the first one to take place during 2000.

The 13th Trade Policy Course was held between 17 January and 7 April. The next course this year will begin on 25 April and will be followed by another in September.

The year 2000 will mark the 45th anniversary of training courses organized by the WTO and its predecessor, GATT. Since 1955, GATT/WTO has organized 96 regular courses for more than 1,800 officials from over 160 countries or customs territories.
