Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente 2017
Comercio y desechos: charla informal organizada por la División de Comercio y Medio Ambiente
Every day 10 million tons of material are designated as waste at factories and households around the world. If not properly managed, waste can give rise to serious health and environmental problems, from air, soil, and water pollution to climate change and ocean degradation. Yet waste is also a growing source of economic opportunity. Not only is getting rid of waste a huge global business, estimated at close to US$300 billion per year; waste also is increasingly viewed as a potential resource. There is even talk of a new age of “urban mining” where valuable components are salvaged from landfills and buildings for reuse and recycling, creating jobs and new business opportunities.
To mark World Environment Day, on 7 June 2017, the WTO Trade and Environment Division invites you to learn more about these issues, and about how trade and the work of the WTO interact with them.
The event will kick off with a discussion of waste from several angles, followed by an informal exchange among participants on an increasingly important topic with vast implications for our own work and lives.
