WTO holds trade course for LDC officials

The WTO Secretariat will hold, on 16 October to 3 November 2000 in Geneva, its Third Short Trade Policy Course for Least-Developed Countries with participants from 42 LDCs. The course aims to assist trade officials broaden their knowledge of the WTO, and identify areas of possible interest and concern for their countries.

Director-General Mike Moore welcomed the growing interest by LDCs for these special courses, citing a record number of participants this year. He said that these courses are a specific follow-up to the 1997 WTO High Level Meeting on Integrated Initiatives for LDCs. “We have been able to expand participation this year, despite limited resources, and we will be doing our utmost in the future to meet the growing demand,” he added.

Mr. Moore also noted that, for the first time, the WTO Secretariat has invited three regional Secretariats from regions with concentrations of LDCs to participate in the course. These are the United Nations Commission for Africa (UNECA), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Forum Secretariat (FORSEC). “I am sure the participants will appreciate the knowledge and insights that these organizations can bring to the course,” he said.
