WTO TRAINING COURSES
37th trade policy course starts
Government officials from twenty-one countries started on 1 May a three-month Trade Policy Course (TPC) in the WTO Secretariat at its Geneva Headquarters. The participants in the 37th TPC were welcomed by Paul Rolian, Director of the Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, who chaired the traditional opening ceremony.

The overall objective of the courses is to widen participants'
understanding of trade policy matters, the multilateral trading system,
international trade law and the functioning of the WTO. It is expected that
the knowledge acquired during this course will allow participants to
contribute to the promotion of a more active participation of their
countries in the WTO work. Throughout the three-month training, officials
will become acquainted, through lectures, debates, attendance at WTO
meetings and simulation exercises, with virtually all the issues dealt with
in the framework of the WTO. Visits to other international organizations
located in Geneva will also allow them to become acquainted with
trade-related aspects of the work conducted by these organizations.
Noting that participants would be in Geneva during a particularly important
negotiating period of the organization, Paul Rolian invited participants to
actively take part in the forthcoming training and to develop and strengthen
a solid network of contacts by attending WTO meetings and discussing with
delegates, WTO experts, and representatives of other organizations.
The 21 Spanish-speaking participants come from developing and
least-developed countries (17 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 4 from
Africa). Five officials come from least-developed countries. All sessions of
the course will be held in Spanish.
The 37th Trade Policy Course is the third of the kind in the 2006
Geneva-based WTO training season. Another Trade Policy Course in English and
a series of shorter courses, including two Introduction Courses for LDCs,
two Specialized Courses, one on sanitary and phytosanitary measures and one
on trade negotiations and two Specialized Course on Dispute Settlement will
complete the Geneva-based programme this year. Four similar Trade Policy
Courses, organized in cooperation with regional academic partners, will be
held in different regions in the world until the end of this year. Other
shorter courses and a large number of national and regional technical
cooperation activities will take place in the field as part of the 2006 WTO
Technical Cooperation and Training Plan.
