The Director-General said:

“We are living through a challenging time in international trade, with low growth, rising trade restrictions and growing negative sentiment. Against this backdrop, we discussed some positive steps that can help to put trade back on track globally and support China in finding new driving forces for the next stage of its economic growth.

“Trade has played a key role in China’s remarkable rise over recent decades, supported by its accession to the WTO in 2001. There is no doubt that trade will remain vital for the country’s continued economic development. In this context, I look forward to working with Premier Li and the Chinese Government, and welcome China’s continued leadership on trade issues, especially through their G20 presidency.”
