During their session on ‘Deepening Regional Economic Integration', the Director-General updated ministers on ongoing negotiations in Geneva in the run-up to MC11 and called for APEC's continued support to help deliver a successful conference and strengthen the multilateral trading system.
The Director-General said:
“APEC members have always been hugely supportive of the WTO and the multilateral trading system. This engagement has helped to leverage trade as a force for growth and development across the region. This is very positive, and I count on APEC's continued engagement and leadership on the road ahead, particularly as we prepare for the WTO's forthcoming Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires.
“There are just over four weeks remaining until we meet in Buenos Aires, and there are a number of issues on the table. There are some positive signs, and there is clearly a great deal of support for a successful MC11 at the political level. This is encouraging. But on all the substantive issues, members' positions remain far apart. If we are to make real progress in Buenos Aires, we need to see more flexibility, urgency and political leadership. APEC members have a major role to play in Buenos Aires and beyond, as we seek to strengthen and improve the multilateral trading system for the future.”
Also in Da Nang the Director-General participated in an event organized by the National Center for APEC, Deloitte and Moody’s on how to foster inclusive growth. His remarks can be found here.
