WTO TRAINING COURSES
More
This regional course seeks to deepen participants' understanding of the WTO Agreements, with a focus on the context of trade policy in Africa and its links with WTO rules. Participants will examine and reflect on the functioning of the multilateral trading system with the support of experts from the WTO and regional organizations, and an academic team from the University of Lomé.
Speaking to participants in a video message shown at the opening ceremony, WTO Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang said that the training programme also provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the strengthening and modernization of the multilateral trading system. Among the topics proposed, DDG Zhang cited “WTO reform”, which “covers a number of aspects that will be addressed over the eight weeks of this training programme.”
Furthermore, as part of the lead-up to the WTO's 13th Ministerial Conference, DDG Zhang said that Members were discussing how to improve the functioning of the Organization. “There is no doubt that the system must become faster and more agile, while not losing its fundamental objective of making international trade an instrument for improving living standards and promoting sustainable development,” he said.
Ms Kayi Mivedor-Sambiani, Minister of Trade, Crafts and Local Consumption of Togo, noted that “Africa's participation in international trade remains very low, and amounts to around 2% of world trade. In order to reverse this situation, Africa needs to enhance its integration, productive and transformative capacities, and skills. This is why the WTO's technical assistance and capacity building programmes on the multilateral trading system are important for the continent.”
She also urged participants to make the most of the training so as to meaningfully contribute, once back in their respective countries, to the continent's participation in world trade and to ensuring concrete results at the 13th Ministerial Conference.
