This donation will finance technical assistance programmes and training
activities for developing and least developed countries as well as economies in
transition. The aim is to better adapt their practices and laws to WTO rules and
disciplines, improve the implementation of their obligations and enhance the
exercise of their membership rights.
This contribution will be used in the Annual Technical Assistance and Training
Plans for 2006 and 2007.
WTO Director General Pascal Lamy declared “I am very happy that France’s
donation will allow the poorest countries to improve and develop their
involvement to the multilateral trading system”.
Permanent Representative Philippe Gros stated “ France has always been committed
to assist the poorest countries in better understanding the WTO system and
better benefit from it. It is crucial for France to play a part in such training
activities and allow developing countries to find new markets and trading
opportunities”.
France is a regular contributor to the WTO technical assistance programmes and
had already donated EUR1 million for the years 2000-2003. So far, France
contributed a total of EUR2,75 million to finance technical assistance
activities.
