Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said: “With MC12 just around the corner, the world expects the WTO and world trade to deliver for people and for the planet, including by finally reaching an outcome in the fisheries subsidies negotiations. I thank Japan for ensuring that LDCs can contribute to achieving this very important goal.”

Japan's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO, YAMAZAKI Kazuyuki, said: “WTO members have made great efforts on elaborating fisheries subsidies disciplines over the years to ensure the sustainability of our marine resources. Japan hopes that through this fund, the negotiations at the 12th Ministerial Conference will be facilitated, with engagement from all WTO members, including LDCs.”

Japan is the first WTO member to contribute to this fund in 2022. Overall, Japan has contributed CHF 11.4 million to the various WTO trust funds over 20 years.
