FAO-WTO webinar – Agrifood trade policies in Europe and Central Asia during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond

The virtual event is part of a series of regional COVID-19 webinars providing practical solutions and food for thoughts to the most pressing issues of food and agriculture in Europe and Central Asia.
A series of agrifood trade measures were adopted to ensure domestic food supply amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, many of which have been short-lived or have already been lifted. Some of the countries and economic communities of Europe and Central Asia opted for domestic support measures by providing subsidies and hoarding stocks.
A joint FAO-WTO webinar will provide a platform for exchanging information and views on trade policies aimed at addressing the impacts of COVID-19 on the region’s agriculture. To support dialogue on agrifood trade policies, the seminar will take stock of and analyze the different measures that have been implemented.
The virtual event will also discuss the significance of trade in Europe and Central Asia, and potential impacts of different domestic support measures, particularly as the pandemic’s consequences are causing questions about the significance of trade vis-à-vis self-sufficiency strategies.
