Industrialization, economic diversification and structural transformation

Limited economic diversification, dependence on a narrow range of exported goods or services and trading partners, constrained domestic production capacity; these are some of the fundamental challenges that the Aid-for-Trade Initiative seeks to address. Aid for Trade is about assisting developing countries to increase exports of goods and services, to integrate into the multilateral trading system, and to benefit from liberalized trade and increased market access.

Conceptually, economic diversification contains different elements: export diversification, structural transformation and industrialization. It implies the shift to a more varied production structure, involving the introduction of new or the expansion of pre-existing products and services, together with industrialization through manufacturing (value added).

This workshop will highlight trends in economic diversification and industrialization. It will highlight policy perspectives and discuss national experiences through presentations of practice perspectives.

Economic diversification and empowerment with a focus on youth and women, (including in rural areas)

Women's economic empowerment has been an objective of the Aid-for-Trade Initiative since its inception. Reference can be found in the Aid-for-Trade Task Force recommendations from 2006. Focus on the issue has grown, as evidenced by the greater profile given to this topic in recent Global Reviews. Monitoring and evaluation results highlight a similar increase in focus, both by developing countries and their financing partners.

The workshop will highlight emerging policy perspectives and discuss national experiences through presentations of practice perspectives. Particular focus will be given to the youth and rural dimensions of empowerment through Aid for Trade.
