During the visit DG Azevêdo had an audience with President Klaus Iohannis and meetings with the Prime Minister, Mr Mihai Tudose, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Viorel Teodor Meleșcanu, and the Minister of Business Envrionment, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, Mr Ilan Laufer.

Speaking at a press conference with Minister Ilan Laufer, the Director-General said:

“It’s clear that trade plays an important role in the Romanian economy. One in four jobs in Romania are export-related. And of course the country plays a key role at the WTO. Romania was a founding member of the organization, and it has a prominent voice through its membership of the EU.

“I have been impressed with what I’ve heard today about Romania’s vision for stronger growth and development driven by openness and trade - including through programs to kick-start small businesses. The WTO can play an important role to support this. Over the last four years we have delivered some major trade deals, including the Trade Facilitation Agreement. This Agreement could reduce trade costs in Romania by 12.2%. That would deliver a real boost to the economy. We want to make sure that the trading system continues working for Romania.”

DG Azevêdo also took part in an interactive dialogue with professors and students of the National School of Political and Administrative Studies.
