The Chair, Mr. Tomohiro Kaneko (Japan), reported
to the Committee that as a result of the discussions on the EU proposal
which took place in an informal mode, participants were open to continue the
discussions on the review process, and agreed to revert to this issue at the
next meeting.
The EU updated the Committee on its proposal on non-tariff barriers on
electronics which it had tabled in the non-agriculture market access (NAMA)
negotiations. It said that this proposal was based on the ITA Committee's
work on non-tariff measures, in particular that on electromagnetic
compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) conformity
assessment procedures.
The Chair urged participants who have not done so to notify their conformity
assessment procedures for EMC/EMI as soon as possible.
The Committee continued discussions on differences of view between
participants on the tariff classification of some ITA products.
The Chair suggested that the participants first deal with the
“easy items” on which
there had been general agreement by customs experts from ITA members. He
said he would be tabling a draft list covering mainly semiconductor
manufacturing equipment for discussion at the next meeting.
