Renato Ruggiero formally appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organization

Mr. Renato Ruggiero was today (24 March) formally appointed as the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization and the GATT in succession to Mr Peter Sutherland. Mr. Ruggiero will take office on 1 May 1995 and will serve as WTO Director-General for a four-year term.

The decision on Mr. Ruggiero's appointment was taken at formal meetings of the WTO General Council and the GATT Contracting Parties. The meetings also agreed to invite the Budget Committee to take up immediately measures necessary to create a fourth Deputy Director-General post in the Secretariat.
