The WTO opened its doors to the public for the first time in 2009, attracting some 5,000 visitors who came to learn more about the WTO, the work of its staff, and the artistic treasures of the Centre William Rappard, the WTO's headquarters in Geneva.

A second Open Day was held in 2010. In June 2013, the WTO's third Open Day coincided with the inauguration of the new WTO building and the completion of the renovation of the Centre William Rappard. The WTO's most recent Open Day, in June 2015, was held as part of the WTO's 20th anniversary activities.
