Trade for Peace Programme:

Pillar 3: Research

The T4P Programme is focusing on generating concrete outputs to help deepen the understanding of the trade-peace nexus, as indicated in the WTO's Annual Report.

Research and Knowledge Hub

In July 2021, the Research and Knowledge Hub was created as a central coordinating unit to gather and disseminate knowledge, information and research on the relationship between trade and peace. This inter-agency taskforce will organize research activities and identify opportunities and gaps in this field.

Trade for Peace index

The T4P index is being developed in collaboration with the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). The Index will provide insights into the linkages between trade and peace and will shed light on the trade conditions that are conducive to peace. This project is jointly managed with the WTO's Knowledge Management Division.

Trade for Peace publication

A Call for Papers was issued in August 2021 for a T4P publication. This publication is expected to set an empirical and conceptual foundation for future research to be undertaken by the T4P Programme. The publication, envisaged to be launched in 2023, will feature 10-15 papers that showcase various aspects of the trade-peace nexus, with the aim of highlighting the different ways in which trade and peace interact.

The selection and review of submissions is jointly conducted with the WTO's Economic Research and Statistics Division and the Knowledge Management Division.

In parallel, the development of a T4P Online Journal or Working Paper series is planned to generate additional research on the topic.

Trade policy instruments used during and after conflicts

An ongoing research project aims to provide a better understanding of the effect of trade policy instruments during and after conflicts. It also aims to strengthen the positive impact of trade on international peace and security by underlining the relevance of the WTO in supporting peacebuilding.

Trade policy instruments used during and after conflicts are being collected in a database that could be used to develop a framework on the usage of trade policy instruments in responding to conflicts.

Trade clauses in peace agreements

A research project, in partnership with the Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG), will review trade provisions in peace agreements and peace provisions in trade agreements. This research work builds on earlier research done in 2019 by the WTO/Graduate Institute Capstone Project.

The project will look into several questions related to negotiations and agreements, including whether the inclusion of trade clauses in peace agreements and vice versa can reinforce the effectiveness and sustainability of the agreement, with the aim of assisting the development of future trade and peace agreement negotiations.
