Although the issue of trade and gender equality has gained increasing attention in the public debate in many countries, research on trade and gender equality has been held back by limited data.

Building on new data, the joint Report by the World Bank Group (WBG) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), "Women and Trade: the Role of Trade in Promoting Gender Equality", provides new analysis on how trade and trade policy can affect men and women differently - in terms of jobs, wages, consumption and welfare.

The new empirical analysis produced for this Report confirms that trade is largely beneficial to women, although many women continue to face discrimination and challenges. The Report further shows that women have unique opportunities to benefit from new trends in global trade, specifically the rise in services, global value chains, and the digital economy.

However, for women to fully reap these trade gains, different public policies aimed at reducing discrimination toward women in trade policy, supporting women's capacity to engage in international trade and mitigating the risks from trade faced by women might be necessary.

In this online event, the authors of the joint WBG – WTO Report on Women and Trade will present the key findings and Julia Nielson, Deputy Director of the Trade and Agriculture Directorate at the OECD will share her comments and views on the issue.
