TRTA: TRADE-RELATED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Introduction courses

The main purpose of Geneva-based Introduction Courses is the dissemination of general information about the WTO, its basic rules and disciplines and its functioning.

The courses usually last three weeks, and are held at Headquarters. Briefings on overall WTO work progress are an integral part of the courses. The development dimension constitutes an important module in the programme of introduction courses. The courses are often conducted with the participation of representatives from ITC, UNCTAD, AITIC and the World Bank. A presentation of the activities of ACWL also constitutes a regular feature of the programme.

In terms of objectives to be reached, it is expected that at the end of the courses the participants will have:

  • developed a general understanding of all aspects of the WTO, including the agreements (transfer of knowledge);

  • become familiar with the relevant information and documentation on trade-related issues (autonomy);

  • strengthened capacity to work in teams and in an international environment (team work); and,

  • established and/or strengthened a network of contacts with each other and the trainers/experts (network).

The Introduction Courses are organized by the ITTC in cooperation with WTO officials from operational divisions. Guest speakers from other organizations active in the specific area of work concerned may also be invited to co-train.

Government officials from LDCs are eligible to participate in the two introduction courses organized annually.

The training methods used put emphasis on interactive learning, practical exercises and case studies.

Details of the courses to be held this year can be found here.
