Diálogos sobre el Comercio: alimentos

En el marco de su iniciativa “Diálogos sobre el Comercio”, la OMC organizará los Diálogos sobre el Comercio, en esta ocasión respecto de los alimentos, con el objetivo de fomentar el debate sobre la función del comercio internacional en la seguridad alimentaria. Se invitará a expertos de diferentes gobiernos, organizaciones no gubernamentales, empresas, el sector académico, grupos de reflexión y fundaciones, que examinarán las cuestiones más relevantes del comercio de alimentos. Introducción

Los Diálogos de la OMC sobre el Comercio de Alimentos tienen por finalidad generar un debate sobre el papel que desempeña el comercio internacional en la seguridad alimentaria. En el marco de estos Diálogos, se invitará a expertos de Gobiernos, organizaciones no gubernamentales, empresas, medios académicos, grupos de reflexión y fundaciones, a debatir en torno a cuestiones de gran actualidad en el ámbito del comercio de alimentos. Cada año, el sistema de comercio internacional mueve suficientes cantidades de trigo, maíz, arroz y habas de soja para alimentar a aproximadamente 3.000 millones de personas de todo el mundo. Paralelamente, la utilización de 190 millones de toneladas anuales de abonos en las tierras de cultivo juega una papel esencial para ayudarnos a cultivar alimentos suficientes para garantizar la subsistencia de nuestras poblaciones en expansión, y una gran parte de esos abonos son objeto de comercio a nivel internacional. El cambio climático hará que el comercio internacional sea todavía más crucial para la seguridad alimentaria, ya que, cuando se hayan producido desastres naturales, servirá de correa de transmisión vital desde los países con excedente alimentario a los que tengan déficit alimentario. Los Diálogos sobre el Comercio de Alimentos tienen por objeto aclarar los complejos vínculos asociados al comercio de alimentos y ofrecer un espacio seguro para el debate sobre las políticas públicas.
